The race is officially on in La Liga. Barcelona is no longer alone in first place after a shock 2-1 defeat at home against Valencia.
Combined with victories from Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, Barca now shares first place with Atletico, with Real just one point behind. Barcelona has the goal differential edge over Atletico to maintain first place.
As for Sunday’s loss to Valencia, Barcelona had its share of chances, but Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves was too much to handle, making brilliant save after brilliant save to preserve the win. As for consolation, Lionel Messi did end his scoring drought and bagged milestone goal No. 500.
To put in perspective how stunning this collapse is for Barcelona, just a few weeks back, they led the league by seven points. Now they have lost three straight games (not counting the Champions League loss to Atletico), and the title is up for grabs.
Here are the standings and what’s next.
